Carlo Boccadoro was born in Macerata in 1963. He studied at the “G. Verdi” Conservatory in Milan, where he graduated in Piano and Percussion Instruments. At the same institution he studied composition with several teachers, including Paolo Arata, Bruno Cerchio, Ivan Fedele and Marco Tutino. Since 1990 his music has been featured in major international concert seasons and venues, including Teatro alla Scala, the Venice Biennale, the Barbican Centre in London, the Musikverein in Vienna and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
He has collaborated with artists from widely different musical worlds, including Riccardo Chailly, Beatrice Rana, Gianandrea Noseda, Paolo Fresu, Franco Battiato and many others. As a conductor and pianist, he has performed hundreds of world premieres of contemporary music, often commissioned for Ensemble Sentieri selvaggi, the cultural project of which he has been co-founder and Artistic Director since 1997. In 2004 Luciano Berio commissioned him to write the children’s opera “La Nave a Tre Piani” for the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.
His operatic output includes titles such as “A Qualcuno piace Tango”, “Robinson”, “Cappuccetto Rosso”, “Boletus” and “SHI”. He has also composed music for numerous theatrical productions, collaborating with directors including Luca Ronconi and Moni Ovadia. Since 2017 he has been Artistic Director of the concert season of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa and, since 2023, a member of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and Artistic Consultant to Teatro Bonci in Cesena.
He maintains an extensive career as a conductor, leading ensembles including the Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala, the RAI National Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also a prolific author and communicator, having published numerous books with Einaudi, Mondadori, Marcos y Marcos and SEM. Since 2021 he has been editorial director of the “CORRENTI” series for Edizioni Curci and for more than twenty years has collaborated with Radio3 and various cultural publications including Il Sole-24 Ore and L’Indice dei Libri.
His compositions have been recorded by prestigious labels including Deutsche Grammophon, Sony Classical, Warner Classics and EMI Classics. In November 2024, Adelphi Editore will publish his translation and edited edition of Nicolas Slonimsky’s celebrated volume “Lexicon Of Musical Invectives”.
